Effect of vitrification on human oocytes: a metabolic profiling study.

2013

Objective To evaluate the effect of oocyte vitrification in the metabolomic profile of embryos developed from vitrified and fresh oocytes in our ovum donation program. Design Analysis of the metabolic profiles of spent culture medium samples corresponding to embryos developed from vitrified and fresh oocytes. Setting In vitro fertilization (IVF) unit/metabolomic facility. Patient(s) Oocyte donors between the ages of 18 and 35 years. Intervention(s) Metabolomic profile liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) of spent media samples. Main Outcome Measure(s) Identification of spent media components and metabolites present and absent in vitrified and fresh day-3 embryos. Res…

Estimation of daily intake of polychlorinated biphenyls not similar to dioxins (NDL-PCB) from fish consumption in Spain in different population groups

2018

AbstractObjectiveTo assess the daily intake of polychlorinated biphenyls not similar to dioxins (NDL-PCB) derived from fish consumption in Spain and compare it with tolerance limits in order to establish a safe threshold so that the nutritional benefits derived from fish consumption may be optimized.DesignAnalysis of NDL-PCB in fish samples and ecological study of the estimated intake of NDL-PCB from fish consumption in different Spanish population groups.SubjectsNational representative sample of the Spanish population.ResultsThe intake of NDL-PCB was estimated in two different scenarios: upper bound (UB) and lower bound (LB). Estimating intake using the average concentration of NDL-PCB fou…

Evaluation of the MGDRx eyebag treatment in young and older subjects with dry eye symptoms

2021

Summary Objectives This study aims to evaluate the relationship between application of the MGDRx thermal eyebag and dry eye signs and symptoms in young and older subjects and to compare the results between the two groups. Methods Thirty young, healthily volunteers between 18 and 31 years of age (23.95 ± 3.94 years) and thirty older subjects between 61 and 90 years of age (77.97 ± 8.11 years) participated in this study. Ocular surface parameters were assessed using the Oculus Keratograph 5 M, following the guidelines of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Dry Eye Workshop II Diagnostic Methodology report. Only subjects with a positive score on at least one questionnaire and an initial Non-Invas…

Autobiographical memory for the differential diagnosis of cognitive pathology in aging

2015

Aim The present study distinguishes three memory stages across the lifespan, and aims to compare episodic and semantic autobiographical memory in healthy older adults, with amnesic mild cognitive impairment, and with Alzheimer's disease. This information can offer evidence about the way semantic and episodic autobiographical memory work, and how the disease affects them. Methods The sample was composed of 56 people, all aged over 60 years; 15 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment, 12 with Alzheimer's disease and 29 healthy older people. Participants were evaluated with the Autobiographical Memory Interview. Results A mixed anova showed significant main effects of memory and time-period, a…

Impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on a long-term care facility: the role of social contact

2021

Background: Long-term care facilities (LTCFs) have been harmed by the coronavirus, and older adults have remained isolated for a long time with many restrictions. The aim of this study was to measure the decline in cognitive, functional, and affective status in a care facility after the lockdown in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and to compare it with previous measures in order to determine if this decline was accelerated. (2) Methods: Ninety-eight participants were recruited. Data from three retrospective pre-lockdown assessments and an additional postlockdown assessment were analyzed. Mixed ANOVA analyses were performed according to the Clinical Dementia Rating levels, considerin…

Coping with Burnout Symptoms through Task Significance in Professionals Working with Individuals with Intellectual Disability

2021

ABSTRACT This study examined an intervention that links task significance (one’s job has a positive impact on other people) to burnout symptoms of professionals working in organizations for individuals with intellectual disability. Professionals assigned to the experimental condition participated in teams designed to enhance the positive impact of their work on others (task significance). To do so, teams focused on a task to improve the quality of life of individuals with intellectual disability. Professionals assigned to the control condition did not participate in these teams, and they continued with their usual work. All the participating professionals answered a questionnaire abou…

2021

The aim of this study was to investigate whether recovery from eccentric squat exercise varies depending on age and to assess whether the use of a mixed-method recovery (MMR) consisting of cold water immersion and compression tights benefits recovery. Sixteen healthy and resistance-trained young (age, 22.1±2.1years; N=8) and master male athletes (age, 52.4±3.5years; N=8), who had a similar half squat 1-repetition maximum relative to body weight, completed two identical squat exercise training sessions, separated by a 2-week washout period. Training sessions were followed by either MMR or passive recovery (PR). Internal training loads [heart rate and blood lactate concentration (BLa)] were r…
